  • SmarterLiving - discount travel information... an information-packed site with free email newsletters. They don't sell travel... but instead help find the best deals. They pride themselves on keeping current with breaking deals. They save a lot of search time if getting the best price is important to you.
  • Miles4Sale.com - you can purchase additional frequent flyer miles you need to get a free airline ticket or upgrade to get the most out of your frequent flyer program.... and it's all legal. Participating airlines include American, America West, Continental, Delta, Northwest Airlines.
  • Travel Accessories
  • Airline Portal Sites ("Published" Fares)
    • Orbitz - of the top 3 airline portal sites (Orbitz, Travelocity and Expedia), this is the one that delivers the lowest "published" fares. It's a little overwhelming at first, but once you get used to it, is the quickest and easiest to use of the three. Don't forget use the buttons that let you rearrange the whole list by price, departure time, and length of flight.
    • Travelocity offers fewer options and delivers shorter lists.
    • Of the three airline portal sites, Expedia is the most unwieldy to use and delivers the poorest results. In a Chicago Tribune usability test, for the same search, Orbitz averaged 11.33 minutes, Travelocity 14.14 minutes and Expedia 18.43 minutes.
  • Airline "Non-Published" Fares
    • priceline.com - they operate by letting you set the price, and the airlines compete for your business. With the right luck and timing you can get some unbelievealb deals here. I highly recomend at least giving them a try for airline travel... first go price the "published" fairs then submit a lowball bid to them... you have nothing to lose..
    • EconomyTravel - "Lowest International Airfares on the Web" They have consolidator (wholesale) contracts with 24 international carriers that permit them to offer the lowest international fares.
    • Here are additional sources of "Non-Published" fares: CheapAirlines (you can coordinate the booking of flights, rental cars and hotel lodging with their online booking system); 4Airlines (discount travel agency); Trip.com (low airfares, car rentals, hotel rates, with personalized travel planning tools and information)
  • Lodging
    • HotelDiscounts - hotel discounts at the lowest guaranteed rates
    • Here are two others similar to HotelDiscounts: USAHotelGuide; All-hotels; HotelsAnywhere;
    • priceline.com - they operate by letting you set the price, and the hotels compete for your business. I like priceline for airline travel... but I don't think their model works as well for hotels. Because once you commit to a price, you have to buy if a hotel of the designated quality accepts your price. When you designate a specific quality level, you really don't know what you are getting... and its too easy for them to cheat and claim they are better than they really are... and give you less than what you thought you were buying. If you are looking solely at the lowest cost... or the highest quaility... it probably OK but for something in between, I'm just not comfortable with this method... though I have friends who have been happy with the results they have obtained.
  • Other
    • EnterpriseCarRental - I like them because they are always one of the least, if not the least, expensive car rental agency... and they provide drop off the pick up services. Though they aren't so convenient for airport travel because they way they keep their overhead down is to avoid paying the expensive airport concessions that the majors pay. Thrifty, Budget and National are alternatives to Enterprise if you need greater airport convenience.
